From living on a sailboat to hand shaping beautiful, one-of-a-kind paddles, EJ truly embraces the YOLO lifestyle. He first got involved in Stand Up Paddling (SUP) in the summer of 2005 and hasn’t stopped ever since. While spreading the YOLO stoke and lifestyle worldwide, EJ will help shape the future of the West Coast race scene, assist with future research & development and play an integral role in YOLO Board’s new California headquarters and distribution center.

EJ is a true pioneer of the sport, excelling in the elite SUP racing circuit over the past five years with consistent finishes within the top five major races throughout the U.S. and abroad. A familiar face paddling the 14′ division, EJ has many SUP achievements under his belt including most recently 1st place in the Da Hui race in Hawaii, 1st in the 50+ and 3rd overall at the race of the Lake of the Sky in Tahoe, and 1st at the Tommy Bahama Santa Monica Pier race.

Growing up in Southern California, EJ has mastered everything from body building, pottery, skilled wood working craftsmanship and of course, SUP. EJ’s hobby is crafting artistic, handmade custom wood paddle masterpieces for SUP enthusiasts (branded Johnson Big Stick).

What are you most looking forward to as part of the yolo team?

I’m stoked to be working with the incredible people of YOLO, including Jeff Archer, Steve Brom and the many unique riders and rising stars on the race team. I’m also thrilled that my beautiful wife, Andie, who signed on as YOLO Board’s first female West Coast racer nearly two years ago, will manage the new retail store.

What’s your motto in life?

KARMA – having respect for every living thing on our planet and always treating others as you would want to be treated.

Who are your sponsors?

YOLO, Honolua, Revo, Watermans Applied Science, Onit Pro, H20 Overdrive, Sambazon, 2XU, Curtis Fins/Fins Unlimited, TRUNQ and Kahuna Creations.

How would you describe your style?

Being a hippie at heart, I’ve been called Iggy Pop and Kid Rock. Growing up in the 70’s gave me the freedom as a youngster to express myself with skateboarding and rock drumming (which I still do today…never grow up!). You just gotta stay true to yourself.

Who or what inspires you?

Seeing people stoked on this sport inspires me to keep it alive and moving forward.

What would you consider your greatest achievement?

I am very humbled to have reached the level that I have attained through this awesome sport. I believe the stepping stones to success are dedication, training and above all, having fun.
