Jessie Benson Hosts SUP Retreat in Nicaragua

Jessie Benson Sunset Island Nicaragua

Nicaragua is one of those countries that has it all, endless beaches to explore and waves to surf, vibrant colonial towns filled with culture, lush rain forests and a massive lake framed by jolting volcanic mountains. There are endless paddle opportunities in this country and it is hard to choose a favorite spot to paddle. However, our recent paddle excursion amongst the Isletas of Granada definitely stands out as one of the most amazing paddle excursions thus far! 365 small islands of volcanic origin wrap around the Asese peninsula just south of the colonial town of Granada. These islands were formed from the eruption of the Mombacho Volcano over 20,000 years ago and have created a unique archipelago that is perfect to explore via SUP.

Nicaragua Monkey

Our adventure began in Granada with Livit Water, a local SUP tour company. We drove to the nearby marina to put our boards in the water. The first stop along our tour was a tiny island with only one inhabitant- Walquiria the spider monkey! This overly friendly monkey is very curious about paddle visitors and she is known for jumping on board with you. We didn’t let her hop on board this time, but I think on our next visit we will let her try out the Yolo Inflatable and give it a little monkey test drive! After an hour or exploring the isletas of all different sizes we made a stop at a tiny speck of an island which is home to El Espino lodge. This one acre island is the perfect private island escape. As soon as you step off the board and on to the island you feel like you have been transplanted onto a lush tropical paradise miles away from civilization (when in reality you are just a 10 minute boat ride away from Granada!).

After a quick tour of the ecolodge we were back on the boards to catch the sun setting behind Mombacho Volcano. There is just something indescribable about a sunset paddle with 2 volcanoes as your backdrop! This was a paddle tour we will never forget! Thanks Livit Water for leading us on this adventure!

If you’d like to come on a paddle adventure in Nicaragua check out the FloYo Retreat and Teacher Training. This 7 day adventure begins in Granada and takes guests paddling through the Isletas of Granada to Zapatera Island where we will spend 2 nights paddling and exploring the island. We will then head to the coast to stay in a gorgeous villa at Rancho Santana where you will get some time to paddle on the pacific. You choose whether you want to tour the 5 beaches of Rancho Santana via SUP and/or try SUP surfing on some of the most famous breaks in Nicaragua! The retreat is January 10-16, 2016.
