An iconic board shaper, Steve has over forty years of experience influencing the design and development of recreational watercraft spanning from surfboards to sailboards to kayaks to stand up paddleboards. Born in Iowa and raised in Southern California, Steve began shaping his own surfboards as a teenager, and his skill and innovation quickly earned him a spot as head shaper at Dyno Surfboards, a leading surfboard manufacturer in the 1970s.
His career progressed over the years leading him to both the windsurf and kayak industries, and ultimately to stand up paddleboarding and YOLO Board. A master of the science of marine engineering as applied to recreational watercraft, Steve’s designs offer a balance of function and aesthetics resulting in beautiful boards that maximize directional stability or alternately directional maneuverability as needed by design. Steve has been instrumental in the direction and development of YOLO Board products since his first venture with the company—the creation of the YOLO Yak, a roto-molded hybrid of a stand up paddleboard and kayak. YOLO Board currently offers an array of Brom’s designs including the popular race boards the Prowler and the Predator.
Steve now resides in Santa Barbara with five wild Blue Jays, one Green-wing Macaw and one stray cat. He enjoys spending time with his daughter when not surfing or dreaming up the latest YOLO Board design.
